Koroni Castle

A Venetian castle and renowned fortified town at the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, which has existed since the 7th century AD and was rebuilt and expanded by the Venetians in the 13th century.

In the following centuries, the town flourished, but it was constantly the “apple of discord” between the Venetians and the Ottomans.

Methoni Castle

Methoni Castle — essentially a fortified town — is one of the most important and most beautiful castles in Greece. It was built by the Venetians after they took control of the city in 1209. It is located in a strategic position, on a rock that extends into the sea and is separated from the mainland by an artificial moat.

It is a characteristic example of a castle-town, covering a large area of approximately 9.3 hectares. It also features an excellent natural harbor, which in medieval times served as a stop for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Lands, as well as for merchant ships sailing from West to East.

The period of the castle’s greatest prosperity is placed during the First Venetian occupation (13th–15th century).

Niokastro Fortress of Pylos

The fortress of Pylos (Niokastro) began to be built by the Ottomans in 1573, shortly after their defeat in the Battle of Lepanto (1571). Its purpose was to control the southern entrance of the Bay of Navarino, since the northern access (Sykia Strait or Faltsa Bouka) and the harbor there, in the lagoon of the Divari or Gialova area, could no longer be used due to sedimentation.

It was named “Niokastro” (New Castle), in contrast to the earlier fortress of Kyparissia (Palaiokastro or Old Navarino), which controlled the northern entrance and the old harbor. From then on, Niokastro followed the common fate of the other fortresses in the area, becoming involved in the historical events that shaped the region.

It remained under Ottoman control until 1686, when it was handed over to the Venetians.

Polylimnio Waterfalls

Nestled between mountains and trees somewhere in the Peloponnese lies a cluster of lakes and waterfalls. This is the so-called “Blue Lake” of Messenia.

In the heart of the Peloponnese, the exotic Polylimnio is truly surprising. It is an unexpectedly dreamlike place, near the village of Charavgi and 34 km from Kalamata. Although the location is not immediately visible, access is easy. Follow the road from Kalamata towards Pylos until you reach Charavgi. From there, a trail begins that leads to Polylimnio.

Leave your vehicle in the parking area and continue on foot. To reach the gorge, you will pass through dense vegetation and cross wooden bridges. The walk takes about 20 minutes. In some parts it can be a bit rugged, but it is definitely worth it.
